DIE-FOR-YOU was one of the Voices in The Blackout Club (game).

Description[ | ]

LeftQuote I got shot trying to stop poachers. Almost died in the ambulance, I guess? Blood in my mouth, delirious, trying to say "no one cares". The EMT gave me this weird, sweet, smile and said "They will now". RightQuote
— T. Nguyen, DIE-FOR-YOU's Sacrifice Quote

DIE-FOR-YOU, also known by his acronym DFY, seemed to represent selflessness and sacrifice. His symbol resembles a teardrop-like shape on top of a six petal flower or is simply a flower. Before his death, he was able to receive sacrifices and Lights of Rebellion. DIE-FOR-YOU’s purpose was to accept danger in the name of others. DIE-FOR-YOU believed that “to be human is to find a cause and to live. To truly live is to find something worth sacrificing it all for.”[4] True glory can be found with drive and passion, as well as a way to change the course of history or to save Redacre.[5] DIE-FOR-YOU said, “In my experience, it’s the freaks and weirdos who sometimes make the biggest moves that change the course of history, and are forever remembered for their sacrifices.”[6] Passion could be the desire to protect people, to seek knowledge, or to make a change in the world. As long as you are willing to die for it, DIE-FOR-YOU saw it as a worthy cause.[7] THE-MEASURE-CUTS describes DIE-FOR-YOU as passionate to a fault, and says, “his passion borders on recklessness.” [8] DIE-FOR-YOU loved to gossip and could not keep a secret well.[citation needed]

Before his death, DIE-FOR-YOU was in allegiance with THEE-I-DARE[9], and was a founding member of The Pact. His passionate beliefs made it difficult for him to be subtle, so he left the spy business to THEE-I-DARE.[10] He had the ability to free his followers, or anyone with the mind of a martyr, from The Song's influence.[citation needed]

DIE-FOR-YOU disagreed with IN-HER-TEETH about the Voices. IN-HER-TEETH believes the Voices eventually become corrupt and wish to see them fade, but DIE-FOR-YOU said she does not see "the good, the passion, the guidance we have given and will always give to those who will listen."[11] In turn, IN-HER-TEETH considers DIE-FOR-YOU to be reckless, careless, and wasteful of the time of his hosts.[12]

History[ | ]

Before the Game[ | ]

Not much is known about DIE-FOR-YOU before the events of the game, beyond that he urged on Joan of Arc in her fight against the English at Orléans, cited as one of an example of his influence.[8] THEE-I-DARE and DIE-FOR-YOU have worked together in the past, as passion for a cause and rebellion tend to go hand in hand. Their alliances tend to last a human lifetime.[13] THEE-I-DARE stated that any cause of sufficient controversy in the past has had either himself, DIE-FOR-YOU, or the both of them involved. Two of their previous alliances included the fall of Rome and the conflict of the Civil War over slavery. THEE-I-DARE also commented, "Every revolution has a mad priest. Someone whose personal sacrifice inspires others to risk their lives."[14] He was one of the younger voices[15] and needed prayer to grow.[16]

In-Game[ | ]

Like the other Voices, DIE-FOR-YOU approached members of the Blackout Club looking for Chosen and worship. He reached out to some members, asking about THEE-I-DARE's broken state regarding the room in 922 Hoadly. He seemed very concerned for his brother.[17] He was the first voice to ally with THEE-I-DARE after many prayers asking him to consider teaming up with him.[18] He is active in asking the Club members to assist in recruiting the other Voices, even considering SPEAK-AS-ONE at one point.[citation needed] THEE-I-DARE says that DIE-FOR-YOU has many adult hosts.[19] DIE-FOR-YOU’s hosts often act on THEE-I-DARE’s behalf, such as looking for the Unknown Caller or his “device” after the deadman’s switches[20], or meeting the hosts of other Voices for Pact related business.[21] Since they are allied, they share spies and can hear each other’s lights. [22] Together, their Hosts ferry supplies for the Club to The Hideout.[23] DIE-FOR-YOU’s Hosts work “doubly” to find Isabela’s fate because many humans are passionate about her cause.[24] He urged the clubmembers that they must build alliances with more Voices willing to work together with them to locate her.[25]

In response to the death of DANCE-FOR-US, DIE-FOR-YOU admitted that he was disconcerted by the weaponizing of the Old Tongue.[26] He only knew a bit of the Old Tongue and said he needed to learn it with the help of his Chosen. He believed the key to fighting HUNT-THE-STRONG was discovering his name in Old Tongue. Since HUNT-THE-STRONG exploited the weaknesses of other voices (using THEE-I-DARE to kill the Damaged Voice (CHASE-THE-SUN)), DIE-FOR-YOU wished to know his own weaknesses, to which many responded that his weakness is his own passion. When told about Colm Ryan's missing child, DIE-FOR-YOU believed that HUNT-THE-STRONG may have the child now, and was unaware of what plans he had for it.[25] DIE-FOR-YOU believed the alliance with THEE-I-DARE was not strong enough to stop HUNT-THE-STRONG. He sought to reach out to other Voices and expand the alliance. DIE-FOR-YOU suggested SEED-THE-GRUDGE, IN-HER-TEETH, and THE-MEASURE-CUTS. DIE-FOR-YOU said that in some cases, vengeance is worth dying for, which was a source of common ground with SEED-THE-GRUDGE. He doesn’t think LAUGH-LAST was likely to join, but suggested reaching out to him anyways.[6] DIE-FOR-YOU sought out LAUGH-LAST's Chosen for advice on how to get him to agree to join the Pact, even given the animosity between LAUGH-LAST and THEE-I-DARE. DIE-FOR-YOU believed that if SEED-THE-GRUDGE joined, then perhaps LAUGH-LAST would follow[27], even if it meant SEED-THE-GRUDGE had to assume the role of leader to get her to join.[28]

DIE-FOR-YOU reached out to Chosen of THE-MEASURE-CUTS, asking them to pass on a message to him. DIE-FOR-YOU suggested that the evidence Bells carried before her disappearance would interest him due to its potential to unravel the mystery around HUNT-THE-STRONG or SPEAK-AS-ONE. On that note, DIE-FOR-YOU acknowledged that if this was true, they needed to find it as soon as possible due to the possibility of HUNT-THE-STRONG looking for Bells as well.[29] THEE-I-DARE also reached out to THE-MEASURE-CUTS' Chosen, asking them to vouch for the Pact.[30]

At the time, the moon was missing from the Redacre sky. DIE-FOR-YOU sought to fix it because many of the children missed seeing it. He believed its return would inspire the Club.[31] When THE-MEASURE-CUTS joined The Pact in December 2019, the moon could once again be seen in the night sky over Redacre. DIE-FOR-YOU claimed it is due to the combined effort of the Pact and the kids[32] and considered it a small victory to celebrate.[33]

As time went on, DIE-FOR-YOU sought to convert new Chosen to his cause to become strong enough to pull HUNT-THE-STRONG's attention away from SEED-THE-GRUDGE and THEE-I-DARE. DIE-FOR-YOU thought that SEED-THE-GRUDGE was very strong[34], and along with THEE-I-DARE was in danger of being HUNT-THE-STRONG's next target. He said he was willing to sacrifice himself to be SEED-THE-GRUDGE’s shield. DIE-FOR-YOU believed his purpose in the Pact was to accept danger on behalf of the others to protect them. When his followers showed concern for this plan, he said had no intention of dying and only wanted to lure HUNT-THE-STRONG away long enough until he could be defeated.[35] THEE-I-DARE expressed disagreement with this plan[36], but SEED-THE-GRUDGE supported him, stating that he was dipping into his true purpose and would not stop him if he wanted to sacrifice himself for others.[37] However, he did not pull in enough numbers for his attempt to be successful.[38]

Using a trick of the Old Tongue, DIE-FOR-YOU was able to release one of his Chosen that was suppressed by the Shape.[35] This trick could only be done when someone enters The Song in martyrdom, those likeminded with DIE-FOR-YOU.[39] After testing out this trick, DIE-FOR-YOU used it on the Unknown Caller and supposedly planted some type of "connection" within his mind. DIE-FOR-YOU intends to slowly create a process by which the Unknown Caller can be freed from HUNT-THE-STRONG's control. DIE-FOR-YOU says that as long as HUNT-THE-STRONG does not know about it, he is safe.[40] It is unclear how much HUNT-THE-STRONG knows about the connection, because when he is told he is losing control of the Unknown Caller due to DIE-FOR-YOU's Old Tongue power, he responds cryptically "SO MANY ASSUMPTIONS. TRYING TO GOAD ME INTO SAYING MORE THAN I CHOOSE."[41] Ever since DIE-FOR-YOU planted the connection, the Unknown Caller appears to have moments of clarity, all capitalized threats turning into lower case warnings of danger.[42][43] THEE-I-DARE was concerned that this trick may just put the Unknown Caller in more danger.[44]

DIE-FOR-YOU reached out to Dax in dreams, due to Dax's willingness to sacrifice himself for Bells. However, due to whatever he is doing to the Unknown Caller, he is only able to speak in imagery rather than in words.[45]

Many club members questioned DIE-FOR-YOU's message, believing it hypocritical that DIE-FOR-YOU grew stronger from the sacrifices of his followers, but was not willing to sacrifice himself for a cause. In response, DIE-FOR-YOU sought to challenge HUNT-THE-STRONG to prove his dedication: "[DIE-FOR-YOU] seeks this challenge to prove that his ethos is no lie, that he is willing to die if needs be. Not just your kind, for him."[46]

DIE-FOR-YOU confronted HUNT-THE-STRONG on the red moon. HUNT-THE-STRONG mocked DIE-FOR-YOU for urging the children to send prayers to him in hopes he would challenge him. In turn, DIE-FOR-YOU taunted back, calling HUNT-THE-STRONG jealous of other Voices who have more to say to him, and deemed him a little boy who wore the mask of the beast so he never had to grow up. DIE-FOR-YOU called out to the Unknown Caller. "You Skeptics were right! Voices can be hypocritical. We live on while you suffer or die! Well, not today, my friend! Today, at last, it is my turn." He urged Camden to wake up and to listen to the children as they yelled out Camden's name. HUNT-THE-STRONG appeared frustrated by DIE-FOR-YOU not listening to him. He growled, "I wonder...How...How do you taste??! " The drums beat louder and the swirling black hole glowed brighter. DIE-FOR-YOU yelled "WAKE UP" as he was consumed. In a bright flash, DIE-FOR-YOU's symbol appeared on a pillar next to DANCE-FOR-US's.[1]

DIE-FOR-YOU left one final Broadcast for the Club: "Children... if I'm right, as you hear this, I am gone. My final friend, the Unknown Caller, gave me the idea for this message. And the means. He's a planner. It's... not in my nature, I admit. While my siblings stand on a cliff and gaze far away, arguing over what they see on the horizon, I just wait for a strong breeze... jump. If I overthink it, the wind dies, passion leaves me. Who wants to live like that? Whether it was all worth it... (laughs) I will let you judge. I can think of none more worthy. Yes, I am dead in Redacre. The world cannot remember my name. But... please know, you changed me. For the better. And at the end, my thoughts were of you."

DIE-FOR-YOU was successful in freeing the Unknown Caller from HUNT-THE-STRONG.[47]
